There is a long history of hypnotherapy in sport. According to Les Cunningham in "Hypnosport", during the 1978/79 tour of Australia, England cricket captain Mike Brearley consulted a medical hypnotherapist. In the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, the Russian team took 11 hypnotherapists with them, to help them to visualise success. Before Roger Bannister ran the four minute mile in 1954, it was considered an impossible achievement. Many sportspeople now employ techniques of mental rehearsal and visualisation to enhance their performance and achieve a positive mental attitude. You don’t need to look hard in any sport to find great champions using hypnotic techniques to improve performance. Perhaps the reason most of them don’t like to talk about it, is because of the myth that hypnosis is a ‘magical’ power which can control you. Athletes use all kinds of scientific technology to improve their performance including equipment, training advances, nutrition and applied sports psychology which will usually include focusing and visualisation techniques (used in traditional hypnotherapy techniques) for improvement.

Many golfers use hypnotherapy, although hypnosis can be equally useful with all kinds of individual and competitive sports. The greatest of champions and athletes tend to be the ones who have learned to think successfully, those who have mastered the psychology of their individual sport.
